Much of my work references furniture forms and domestic environments. My research interests and the sources that inform this work include the all-white image in art, monochromatic work in general, genre painting, the history of porcelain, and the relationship between public and private spaces. Mirage (writing cabinet) embodies these layered interests, as it takes a form that loosely references European and American ladies’ writing desks from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I am interested in the role of these desks as gendered objects designed to organize, protect, and sometimes, display their contents.
Mirage (writing cabinet) was fabricated from delicate porcelain slabs and fired to the point of near collapse. In this cabinet, the letters, books, souvenirs, and curiosities that typically fill cubbies are absent, as is the stability of the architecture meant to support them. The image has been constructed, but it has also been reduced-to a system and a structure stripped of natural color, mass, contents, and function.
